Joe Maguire looks set to be the next of Ilkeston FC’s key players to commit to the club for another year as the Robins continue to plan for the next campaign.
The 21-year-old proved a consistent performer at the heart of defence last term, claiming the supporters’ player of the year award in the process. He can also provide cover in midfield if necessary.
And with the ability to also wade in with his fair share of goals, manager Kevin Wilson has been keen to secure Maguire’s future given potential interest from other clubs.
Wilson told the club’s official website: “I’ve had very constructive talks with Joe and we are close to agreeing a new deal.
“I think he has had offers from other clubs - which is hardly surprising after the season he’s just had - but the bottom line is that he enjoys playing for Ilkeston FC and he wants to stay.”
Maguire began his career at Scunthorpe United before a spell with the now defunct Ilkeston Town, with Wilson keen to bring the talented youngster back to the New Manor Ground once Ilkeston FC had been formed.
Brother Harry is a regular in Sheffield United’s line-up, and many have tipped the Robins man to reach the professional game in due course.
Wilson added: “He’s a talented boy who has perhaps not always done himself justice, but he showed last season with consistently good performances that he is ready to fulfil his potential.
“He did fantastically well for us at the heart of the defence and I was pleased that he got the recognition he deserved by winning the supporters’ award.
“It’s a fact that this time last year, we could easily have let him go. It was very much a case of ‘shall we give him a new contract or not’. In the end, we did - which proved to be a brilliant decision - and now I hope we can tie him up for another year.
“By putting our young players on contracts it protects the interests of this football club - and it’s an important part of my job to do that.”
Meanwhile, tickets for the prestige pre-season friendly against a Chelsea XI on Tuesday, July 30 have been selling in large quantities after going on sale to a select group of fans on Monday.
Supporters queued at the New Manor Ground to get their hands on the tickets as well as ordering many via telephone.
Tickets will remain on sale to season ticket holders, IFC Supporters Group members and junior members only until Tuesday, June 11, when they will then go on general sale.
