Wayne Morledge’s Ilkeston FC column: Delight as Rob Duffy stays at the club

Last week it was all about leading goal scorer Rob Duffy.

Prior to Monday night’s match against Kings Lynn rumours were flying around that Duffy may be leaving the New Manor Ground later that week.

However, he played on Monday and scored a wonderful goal against his former club taking his tally to eight league goals.

The following day the club broke the official news that Goole had put in seven days notice to discuss terms with Duffy.

To his immense credit he turned down what would probably have been better money to stay with the Robins.

This will no doubt endear him with the fans even more than his current goal scoring form.

Personally I would have been gutted if he had gone as his partnership with Kane Richards has been brilliant this season.

The Duffy story didn’t end there though. On Saturday Ilkeston were away at Matlock for the second successive week, this time in the FA Cup.

Matlock took the lead, but Kane Richards equalised deep into stoppage-time in the first half.

Ilkeston then turned the screw in the second half, but had to wait until the 89th minute for the winner, scored of course by man of the moment Duffy.

Through to the second qualifying round and a step further then we managed last season. Excellent result.

The Under-21s were due to have a cup match of their own against Thurnby Nirvana FC, but Thurnby withdrew from the competition giving the youngsters a bye to the next round. Maybe they were scared after seeing the Ilkeston U21s score 14 goals the previous week?

The Under-15s proved that they also know how to find the back of the net as they hit seven past Solihull Moors, although they will need to tighten up at the back as they conceded five in what sounded like a very entertaining game.

It’s great to see goals flowing in at all levels of the club.

It’s certainly a good time to be an Ilkeston FC supporter.
