Two Derbyshire FA Officials have represented the country at the European Deaf Futsal Championships in Bulgaria.
Andy Page, of Ilkeston, and Jake Leversuch, of Sandiacre, were selected as two of 11 European referees to work alongside six Bulgarian officials.
Held in the Bulgarian capital of Sofia, the 12 day tournament saw the men officiate 10 games, including the men’s semi final between the Netherlands and the eventual champions, Ukraine.
The standard of Futsal on display was of a very high standard from both men’s and women’s teams.
Day three saw the biggest challenge of the tournament, for which Andy was appointed first referee to the fixture Israel v Turkey.
He said: “The atmosphere before the game was electric. There was certainly no love lost between the two sets of supporters.”
On finals day, Jake was selected to be time keeper in the ladies final between Russia and Germany, with Russia emerging as winners.
Jake said: “I really appreciated the opportunity to be involved with Futsal at such a high level, and to be appointed as timekeeper to the final itself was a great honour.”
Earlier this year, the men refereed at a qualifying tournament in Ireland, and on the back of this performance, were asked to go to Sofia.
Andrew Scolding, of the European Deaf Sports Organisation, was very impressed with the refereeing standards, and claimed that the English men’s team were the strongest and fairest in the competition.
