Ilkeston FC have completed the signing of Burton Albion midfielder Mark Shelton.

The 19-year-old began his career at Nottingham Forest before taking up a scholarship with the Brewers, and has featured in the first team squad on several occasions.

He told the Robins’ official website: “Training with the first team at Burton was a good experience for me, as was training at St George’s Park.

“It was good at Burton, getting the chance to work with big names like Nigel Clough and Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink as you learn a lot from people like that who have had good careers in the game.

“I was on the bench for the first team a few times, but I got an injury which kept me out for a few months and hampered my progress into the first team.

“I’ve known (Ilkeston head coach) Paul Holland for a few years, we live in the same area and whenever I’ve seen him he always asked how I was doing at Burton. Ilkeston is a good club, it has a good youth policy and produces some really good players.

“It’s appealing to come to a club like this, one that gets good crowds and is well supported.

“I’ve seen some of my old team mates make the move to Ilkeston in Joe Doyle and Marcus Harness and that played a massive part in me wanting to come here as they told me how good the set up is here and when I had to start thinking about where I’d be playing my football next season, it was my first choice.

“One of the strong points of my game is getting forward and adding a few goals to my game, hopefully I’ll get plenty of chances to do that here.”

New head coach Holland said: “I’ve known Mark for a while now and I’ve followed his career progress at Burton.

“ Marcus Harness and Joe Doyle both spoke very highly of him when I used to ask how he was getting on. I was surprised when he was released by Burton, but he got in touch with me and said how keen he was to come to Ilkeston.

“He knows that he isn’t guaranteed a place in the starting XI, but if he can do what I know he’s capable of, then he won’t be far off and I’m sure he’ll progress well with Ilkeston.”

The Robins have also announced that goalkeeper Jamie Hannis and defender Ryan Head have agreed new deals with the club for next season.
