Sandiacre Town second XI emerged victorious from a top-of-the-table clash at South Wingfield on Saturday to close the gap on their opponents to 30 points.
Sandiacre skipper Ben Ruhrmund won the toss and elected to give the hosts first bat, a decision that paid off as opener Alex Mace fell with only four runs on the board off the bowling of Andy Rhodes.
South Wingfield settled and a partnership of 52 between Steve Shuttleworth and Andrew Wilson took them past the 50 mark before Shuttleworth was out lbw to Dan Tucker.
Wilson fell soon afterwards to become Rhodes’ second victim, but Chris Dunn came to the crease and hit a swift 55 before he was fifth man out, Liam Mitchell having been bowled by Rhodes before that and Rhodes then taking the catch to dismiss Dunn from Ruhrmund’s bowling.
Charlie Jones’ 33 was useful for the hosts but other than that, they struggled to make much further impact and were eventually all out for 195, Tucker the pick of the bowlers with 4-57 and Rhodes taking 3-34.
In reply, David Jordison was first out with the score on 22 but fellow opener Jake Trembling was there to stay and he would remain through the innings to finish unbeaten on 55, ten fours helping him along the way.
Danny Green scored 22 and Ruhrmund was forced to retire hurt having only faced two balls, but Rhodes’ 25 and Tucker hitting 41 off 35 balls, including four fours and three sixes, helped Sandiacre over the line in the 33rd over and with only four wickets down.
