An Ilkeston basketball player is celebrating after earning a call-up to represent the East Midlands at a regional tournament recently.

Darcie Ashley, a member at Ilkeston Outlaws Basketball Club, earned her place to represent the county at the Basketball England under-13 girls regional development tournament in Sheffield earlier this month.

The event sees teams from each of the ten regions of England compete against each other and gives players a chance to get on the performance pathway.

The East Midlands region finished in fifth place overall, with the North West region taking the top spot.

Darcie earned her place on team by impressing the regional coaches at the regional tournament in Nottingham, where teams from Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire, Lincolnshire and Northants competed against each other.

Outlaws’ coach Becci Carter said: “We are very proud of Darcie for her recent success.

“Darcie started at Outlaws in our minis programme and now plays for the under-16 girls team.

“We’re pleased she has made it on to the performance pathway and we look forward to supporting her to continue to develop and improve.”

Outlaws’ under-16s are looking for new players to join the team. Email ilkestonoutlaws@gmail.com for more information.
