A scrapbook strike from veteran goalscorer Lee Hughes secured all three points for Ilkeston against misfiring Colwyn Bay on Saturday.
Hughes’ sumptuous 20-yard effort found the net early in the second-half, the frontman having already teed up Jonathan Edwards for the opening goal despite the Robins weathering an early storm.
Gavin Strachan’s side had Evandro Rachoni to thank for a string of early saves, as well as a late penalty, before breaking away to punish the squandering Seasiders in style.
Rachoni gathered a fifth minute shot from Carl Rodgers at his near post after Cory Williams’ low cross had dissected the Ilkeston penalty area.
And Rachoni pushed a difficult 25-yard strike around the post as Kevin Holsgrove’s effort bounced in front of him seven minutes later.
Michael Williams dragged a shot wide as the Robins pushed forward but Rachoni was in action again to deny Chris Sharp on the 20-minute mark.
Ilkeston survived, however, and Edwards put them in front when he connected with a Hughes header which went back across goal from Joe Doyle’s deep cross.
Hughes then doubled Ilkeston’s lead soon after the break when the 39-year-old rolled back the years to cut inside and produce at stunning 50th minute effort that found the top corner from the edge of the box.
Rachoni denied Colwyn Bay a goal back when he saved from Cory Williams who had surged into the danger zone.
Hughes was inches away from adding a third when he almost converted from the edge of the area for a second time – this time seeing his shot go wide as the visitors caught their hosts short at the back.
And Colwyn Bay goalkeeper Chris Sanna pulled off a full-length stop to thwart Ilkeston substitute Charlie Coulson before Rachoni saved Robbie Booth’s fierce penalty after Rob Hopley was felled eight minutes from time.
