This was always likely to be a straightforward tie for Ilkeston FC to negotiate and so it proved.

Progress to the semi-finals was never in doubt as a much-changed Robins side tore Holbrook, who play three divisions lower, to pieces in the latter stages.

The hosts were always in control and despite Sports having the audacity to nick a goal in the opening minute of the second-half, that was about the only joy they’d take from the evening as they inevitably tired late on and Ilkeston ran them ragged.

For the Robins, it’s now 13 wins in 14 in all competitions as their momentum continues to carry them forward.

The only real surprise of the night was that it took 38 minutes for Ilkeston to score their first goal

Before that, Rai Simons and Mike Williams both missed numerous chances and Sports’ Isaac Minott also should have scored but poked wide when in a good position.

Williams would finally get his goal when he cut inside and fired in a low shot past Graves and into the corner.

That was followed by a second moments later as Evan Garnett turned home a mis-hit shot from Joe Maguire six yards out.

A two-goal lead was all Ilkeston would have to offer at the break despite almost total dominance but that lead was then halved only 40 seconds into the second period as Minott muscled his way free of Jack Lane before smashing the ball past Jordan Smith and into the roof of the net.

The two-goal lead was restored four minutes later when Danny Gordon placed a delightful effort into the corner of the net from 25 yards out that Graves, for whom Holbrook could otherwise thank for keeping the Robins tally in single figures, could only stand and admire.

Akil Wright, Curtis Burrows and Simons all nearly scored the fourth before Williams finally did on 64 minutes, Garnett’s low ball into the box turned in by the unattended Welshman for his second.

Holbrook’s Kyle Hazeldine saw a shot deflected past the post by a Robins defender and Simons had an effort gathered by Graves after good work by debutant sub Greg Simmons before Gordon flicked over having been fed by Garnett.

It then took Ilkeston eight minutes to score as many as they had in the previous 80.

First, Simons got the goal he deserved after Burrows had beaten two men and squared to the Bermudan who tapped in from a couple of yards out.

Simons blazed a good chance for another over the top moments later but he then turned provider by getting to the byline and pulling back for Simmons to net his first Robins goal from close range.

Garnett got his second of the night within a minute, running on to emphatically blast number seven into the roof of the net, Simons following suit with a low finish from a similar position on 88 to make it 8-1.

That signalled the end of Sports’ agony as the referee blew for time soon afterwards and ended as comfortable a passage through as Ilkeston could have wished for.
