ILKESTON RUFC got their Midlands One (East) campaign off to a winning start with a 29-15 success over Spalding at The Stute on Saturday.
It was an ideal start to the season for the Elks, who are aiming to push on for promotion to the national leagues this year after just missing out on the play-offs in the last campaign.
Joel Haigh got things up and running with the opening try of the game, and he was to add another later on.
Debutant Stephen Fowkes also got on the scoresheet, with JJ Connolly not only converting three tries and a penalty but also scoring a try himself as Ilkeston ran out comfortable winners.
The Elks’ next match is at Peterborough this Saturday, kick-off 3pm.
Full reports on the Elks’ matches should return next week.
