Ilkeston ran out 24-15 winners at bottom club Old Laurentians in the Midlands Division One East on Saturday.
The travelling Elks made hard work of it though and were trailing at the break following a poor first half performance.
Jack Partington punished a home side mistake on the half-way line, fending off several would-be tacklers to go over in the corner.
Adding to three first half penalties from the boot of Joel Haigh allowed Ilkeston to stay in touch with OL’s three unconverted tries.
The second half saw a much better performance from the Elks who kept the home side at bay for the rest of the game.
Whilst a further converted pushover try from captain Simon Bennett and another penalty from Haigh made the final score 24-15.
The first game after the Christmas break was always going to be difficult and it saw a rusty side, eventually show signs of the form they produced in the first half of the season.
The man of the match goes to Joel Haigh whose boot kept the home side under pressure all game.
