The champagne is on ice at Sandiacre Town after a weekend that propelled them ever closer to the Premier Division title in the Derbyshire County League.
While Sandiacre were beating Spondon by 54 runs, their closest rivals for the champions’ crown, Eckington, were suffering a surprise defeat at the hands of Swarkestone. Now the leaders head the table by fully 52 points with just two games to play -- at home to Alvaston and Boulton this Saturday and then away to Ockbrook and Borrowash on Saturday, September 16.
Put into bat by the hosts, Sandiacre made 240 thanks to solid contributions by all their top-order batsmen, most notably openers Scott McNeill (55, 11 fours) and James Chapman (46, six fours), who put on 98 for the first wicket. Dan Birch added 33, Robert Cook 27, Dan Wheeldon 23 and Jack Anderson 22 before Spondon bowler Chris Windmill picked up 5-64 late on.
The home team’s reply got off to a decent start, but was soon shedding wickets at regular intervals to Matt Newbold (3-39), Kabeer Imtiaz (2-26), John Jordison (2-39) and Cook (2-39). Joe Ashdown (48) tried to delay Sandiacre’s victory charge, but the last wicket fell in the 48th over.
