Long Eaton United began their Midland Football League season in style with a 2-0 win over Herefordshire side Westfields on Saturday.
The first-half was a very close affair but it was Westfields who started the game better and in the 12th minute should have taken an early lead but a mis-kick sent the ball wide from just inside the box.
Both sides created openings but United’s pressure paid off in the 52nd minute. A free-kick was sent over into the box and Ross Parker glanced a header into the corner of the net.
In the 67th minute the home side stretched their lead as another free-kick was drifted in accurately and this time Shaun Rickford made space for himself and unchallenged nodded the ball home.
With ten minutes to go United won a penalty as Ben Watkiss was brought down inside the area, Rickford stepping up to take the resulting penalty but the keeper making a fine save.
United keeper Richard Hankey saved well late on to deny Westfield a goal back, as the hosts held on to take the points.
On Tuesday night, Long Eaton made the trip to Coleshill Town and recorded a 1-1 draw.
After falling behind in the first-half, Theo Smith’s second-half goal earned United a point.
