A letter has been sent to parents of children who attend Brookfield Community School following the incident at Somersall Park.

It says parents should be on their guard after youngsters were targeted by thieves.

Deputy headteacher Richard Cronin said in a letter to parents, dated Monday, January 20: “I would like to make parents aware that on Friday evening, there was a serious incident in Somersall Park where some of our students had their personal belongings stolen by a group of unidentified individuals.

“Please could all parents talk to their children about the dangers associated with being in public places during evening time, especially on dark nights.”

Some residents using the park this week said they were not surprised by the incident.

Sarah Letwin, 63, said: “I’m not shocked because we do see a lot of kids hanging around. It’s generally pretty low-level anti-social behaviour but that can always escalate if it’s not stamped out.”

However, another resident, enjoying a walk at the park and who asked not to be named, said it was a ’quiet’ spot which saw very little trouble.

A Derbyshire police spokesperson said three boys and two girls were sat at the bandstand at Somersall Park at around 6.30pm on Friday, January 17 when they were approached by four men.

The men demanded the group handed over any items they had. One of the victims, a 16-year-old boy, told them they wouldn’t, and was pushed by one of the men. The other two boys were also pushed by the offenders and the victim was concerned one of the men may have had a knife.

Thee men stole three e-cigarettes, a wallet, some Apple Airpods and a bag.

The men then got into a small dark car in the car park and drove off along Somersall Lane, towards Chatsworth Road.

They are reported to have been wearing tracksuits and beanie hats, with face coverings and gloves.
