And now Stefan and his family have gone to Mexico to get him the treatment which may help save him.

Posting on Facebook yesterday morning, Stefan’s sister Emma, wrote: “As a family we have had to make a tough decision, with Germany saying it could still be ‘weeks’ before they can get Stefan there we have had to make the decision in taking him to Mexico for the same treatment.

“Stefan, Rebecca, mum and Daniel are flying out tomorrow to start treatment Friday. It’s all very scary with it being so far away but we have researched and researched and want to give Stefan that chance. Please send all your love and prayers and please keep sharing and donating. Let’s all just remember Stefan is the bravest man."

Mr Hawcroft, who is married to wife Rebecca, has been a firefighter for 10 years.

The couple had to bring their wedding day forward by 18 months due to Stefan’s condition.

The treatment Stefan needs - immunotherapy - is not available on the NHS.
