DERBYSHIRE: Residents urged to take extra care in heatwave

The mercury is set to hit nearly 30C in parts of Derbyshire over the next few days, according to the Met Office.

Steve Pratten, of East Midlands Ambulance Service (EMAS), said: “Last Saturday we received more than 2,600 emergency and urgent calls – a 15 per cent increase compared to the previous Saturday.

“Many of those calls were from people who were feeling unwell as a result of the hot weather or because they had not taken necessary precautions to protect themselves or their loved ones.

“Temperatures are set to increase again this weekend so we’re asking people to take responsibility for their health and well-being while they enjoy the weather.”

EMAS has issued the following advice:

• Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water – particularly if you’re having alcohol

• Wear a sun hat and sunscreen to prevent burning or heat stroke

• If you beging to feel unwell in the heat, sit down and rest inside and have a drink of water

• Call NHS Direct on 111 if you still feel unwell after a time

• Constantly supervise children and babies in paddling and swimming pools

• Don’t swim in dangerous places like rivers, lakes, ponds or quarry water
