Explosion heard and building partially collapses on Chesterfield street

On Monday night, Derbyshire Constabulary said St Helen’s Street and Higher Albert Street were closed following a ‘partial building collapse’ on St Helen’s Street.

At this stage, officials have not said if there were any injuries.

It is also yet to be officially confirmed what caused the building to partially collapse.

Staff at the Neptune Beer Emporium on St Helen’s Street said they heard an explosion.

In a statement shortly before 8pm, a police spokesperson said: “People in parts of Chesterfield will lose their gas and electric supply following a partial building collapse.

“Firefighters are currently at a property in St Helen’s Street, where there is severe structural damage to a building.

“In order to deal with the incident, the gas and electric supply needs to be cut off and will be out for at least three hours.

“It is unclear at this moment how many properties this will affect.”

As well as police, firefighters from Chesterfield, Staveley, Clay Cross and Nottingham Road were called to the incident.

Members of the public are urged to avoid the area.

Further details are expected to be released by officials on Tuesday.
