The Staveley Town Deal is aiming to secure up to £25million of Government funding to help improve Staveley.

Now, Chesterfield Borough Council has launched an online consultation asking people how they would like to see the area developed in the future.

The council has hinted that the Government funding could go towards projects including the Chesterfield-Staveley Regeneration Route, which would see a new 5.7km single carriageway connecting the A619 north of Chesterfield town centre to the A6192 and A619 at Staveley.

Money might also go towards the remediation of the former Hartington Colliery site.

Councillor Tricia Gilby, leader of the council, said: “It’s vital that local residents and businesses have their say on the future of Staveley.

“We need to work together to ensure that we are delivering the projects that matter most to the people of Staveley.”

Ivan Fomin, who is chairman of the Staveley Town Deal Board and managing director of local business MSE Hiller, added: “It is a great chance for local people to be involved in deciding how this funding should be used.

“A key measure of the success of the project will be the level of local benefits that can be achieved for the local community.”

When the Derbyshire Times visited Staveley last month to ask for residents’ views on the town, many had ideas on how to spend the money.

Janet Humar, 67, said: “I’d like to see the town centre rejuvenated with more things to do – a cinema would be great.”

And market trader Pam Ripper, 61, added: “It would be great to see more traders and customers on Staveley market – I think that would really give the town a boost.”

There are exciting proposals for Staveley in the pipeline.

Last year, plans were submitted to build up to 700 new homes on the former Staveley Works site.

Chesterfield Canal Trust has also submitted a planning application for the restoration of the remainder of the waterway which falls within Chesterfield borough – a 1.6-mile section from Staveley to the edge of Renishaw.

HS2 has opposed those major plans.

Take our poll now to have your say on what you think Staveley needs most.
