Police probe distraction burglary

Police are investigating after a man tricked his way into an elderly woman’s home in North Wingfield and stole cash and jewellery.

The man knocked on the door of the house on Williamthorpe Road at about 7.15pm on Monday.

He said he needed to check something in the pensioner’s garden and she let him in.

While in the house the offender stole cash, the woman’s handbag and a number of her rings.

The man is described as white, aged between 30 and 40, of medium build and wearing a checked shirt.

Community Safety Inspector Russell Dakin called it a “despicable crime” and urged residents to remain vigilant.
