Council tax rise on the cards for Chesterfield residents

The proposed increase for 2020-21 will see council tax bills for those in a band A property go up by 6.4p per week – or £3.33 per annum. Most Chesterfield residents are in a band A property.

Properties in band D will see charges rise by 9.6p per week – or £5 per annum.

Commenting on the planned increase on social media, Adam Ward said: “I think I can live with a £3.33 increase.”

James Fletcher said: “I’ve no real issue with them going up a bit but frankly I’ve no idea what this extra amount goes to.”

Councillor Tricia Gilby, council leader, previously told the Derbyshire Times that council tax helps to fund more than 50 services which are provided by the authority, including waste collection, environmental health and parking services.

She added that since the 2015 local elections, the authority had lost more than £1.9million each year in funding from the government.

The council is expected to approve the council tax rise at a meeting on Wednesday.

Chesterfield Borough Council receives only ten per cent of council tax paid by residents. Derbyshire County Council receives 74 per cent, Derbyshire Constabulary gets 12 per cent and Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service receives four per cent. Residents in Staveley and Brimington also pay for services provided by their town and parish councils.
