Met Office issues yellow thunderstorm warning for Chesterfield and Derbyshire today – with reports of potential flooding

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for Chesterfield and Derbyshire – with residents told that thunderstorms and flooding could hit the region.

The Met Office has confirmed that a yellow weather warning is in place for thunderstorms in Chesterfield and Derbyshire between 9.38am and 1.00pm today (Thursday, October 20).

Heavy showers and thunderstorms are expected to move northwards this morning, and some places could see between 20mm and 40mm of rain within an hour. Lightning will also pose a hazard, and the rain is set to continue throughout the afternoon – but becoming less intense as the day progresses.

The Met Office has reported that there is a small chance of homes and businesses being flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds. Where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is also a chance of delays and cancellations to train and bus services.

Spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures, and there is a slight chance that power cuts could occur and other services to some homes and businesses could be lost.
