"I’ve followed Fraser for quite some time and his attributes fit into the way we are trying to move forward,” Rowe said.

“He is a great addition to our squad and strengthens us for what will be a busy fixture schedule until the end of the season.”

The centre-back has played for Motherwell, Cowdenbeath, Stenhousemuir, Gateshead and Hartlepool United before signing for Torquay at the start of this season.

He has also represented Scotland at under-21 level.

Kerr’s move to Chesterfield from Torquay comes after Spireites striker Scott Boden moved the other way on loan until the end of the season last month.

Torquay boss, Gary Johnson, said: “Unfortunately due to the Covid lockdown rules, and Fraser living in the digs, he wasn’t able to go home and see his family. With him not being involved in the first team at that time, we agreed to let him go to a club a lot nearer to his home.

“We enquired about Scott Boden, and I’m pleased to say we managed to do deals for both players, and it’s a good situation for both players.”

When signing the defender last July, Johnson said: “He's a good athlete, he's got good pace and he can play.

"He meets our club's profile for what we are looking for, and he is very ambitious.”
