Even the reporters from the BBC in Wales said that it was a fair result and they can’t wait for their own side to improve, once their Hollywood-based backers finally get the takeover deal done.

We are now looking upwards and the gap separating Chesterfield and the play-offs looks achievable within the next week or so.

It has been hard to be anything but a pessimist for the last five years, but really the new-look Chesterfield have nothing to fear from anyone in this division.

Goalkeeper Kyle Letheren has now departed through the revolving door at the Technique Stadium. Most Spireites wish him good luck although it was obvious with the signings of Grant Smith and Adam Przybeck that there would be some movement out of the club. This looks like a good deal for all concerned.

Meanwhile, the goings-on at pre-season favourites Stockport County, have been curious. Their manager Jim Gannon has left and a statement from Edgeley Park said that he didn’t fit into the “culture of the club’. I’m not sure what 80s pop group Culture Club has to do with football, but perhaps Jim didn’t like Boy George’s greatest hits. Jokes aside, that is the end of his second spell there and it is rumoured that the players forced him out, so much the better for Chesterfield if their form suffers as a result.

I will be interested to see how our 12 new signings gel, but like I say, nothing to fear.
