The former Blues striker, 43, was on the interview panel and helped the community trust come to a decision.

Rowe, 37, was considered the best candidate and he has made a promising start with a win and a draw from his first two games in charge after leaving Gloucester City.

“He came in prepared, he knows what his strengths are, he backs himself, he is confident and I think that has shown with how Gloucester has started this season,” Davies told the DT.

During his interview Rowe showed the panel video clips of Chesterfield in action this season and compared them to his table-topping Gloucester team.

“He is young, hungry and he wants to be successful,” Davies said. “It is not just the presentation, it was the way he carried himself, the way he answered the questions and he is very professional.

“There were about 60 applicants, a lot of good managers in there who have had success, some up and coming, and it was a case of it being a new board, a new start and wanting someone with fresh energy, someone on the way up and I think James certainly comes into that category. He stood out. He impressed everyone in the room. I know he is excited about the challenge.”

He added: “Some will look at it as a brave choice, in the end everyone was just blown away by him. I think that is what the club needs. I think everyone had belief in James and in the end it was an easy decision for everyone.”

Davies has recently set up his own football agency business, KCD Management, and he is enjoying the challenge so far.

“I have always enjoyed helping people and I see this as helping players keep away from the pitfalls, keeping away from the things that can stop them from achieving what they want to achieve,” he said. “I have got about 13-14 players, I have been doing it for two months and they are great lads, they have a lot of potential and I am enjoying the role.”
