Leaders Chesterfield urged to 'keep going' after hammering York City - reaction

The Spireites scored four times in the second-half to ensure they remain top of the league.

Coach Danny Webb said: “We are really developing something that is good but developing is the key word because there is a long way to go. We have got a bit of everything at the moment. The gaffer has said this week that we must maintain this good start and keep working hard because football changes very quickly. If they take their foot off the gas, the results will follow.”

After a quiet first-half, goals after the break from Ollie Banks, Tom Naylor and a brace from Will Grigg secured the points.

Webb told the DT: “The result is fantastic. I think the dominance of the second-half is probably as dominant as we have been this season. But in a weird way I was more pleased with the first-half because we didn’t play great but as a team we defended so solidly. It was an average performance in the first-half, we don’t want to do it every week, but when you do, you don’t want to concede. They had to liven up in the second-half and they certainly did that.”

He continued: “The sign of a good team is when you are not at your maximum and you don’t concede. To come in at 0-0 was very important knowing that we had not played very well. If they (York) had scored first then their low block would have become a really low block.

“We made it clear that they needed to go up a notch and they did that and it led to a very comfortable win. As soon as we got that first goal I thought we really started to dominate. The first-half was okay, but the second-half was excellent.”

Grigg made it 3-0 from close-range before adding a clever fourth from a tight angle.

On the striker, Webb explained: “Even when Will Grigg does not score, he does the role of a target man really well, even though he is not a target man. His work-rate is first-class and I am so happy that he has got two goals tonight, the second was sublime. I think they (York) are adamant he was offside for the tap-in but we have watched it back and he wasn’t. He does such a sharp movement, which only top strikers can do. and it comes naturally to him.”

Goalkeeper Harry Tyrer missed out with a back problem, which gave Ryan Boot another chance in goal.

Webb said: “He felt it on Friday. He said he feels a lot better today. I think he will be fit for selection for Kidderminster. Today it was not worth taking the risk. Boot has trained brilliantly, been professional, and in the last two games he has kept two clean sheets and been excellent so that is another selection problem but they are great headaches to have.”
