And the Saints could have sneaked into the fourth round in the final minute when Lee Ndlovu headed JImmy Armson’s cross wide at the far post.

Wilkin said: “With the results they have had lately we knew it would be tough, but we grew into the game second half and I think we had the best chance of the game with Ndlovu.

“It could have swung our way but the belief that the players showed to keep going after they’ve been a little bit under the cosh.

"We could have gotten ourselves into a better position in the penalties but we just didn’t quite see it through.”

The Spireites have conceded just one goal in five games under manager James Rowe.

When asked what has been the key to this impressive record, he said: “The pressure in the first half was immense - we really pressed the ball really well.

“They were barely in our half so if you are restricting them to few final third entries then defenders have got less to do.

“It is a mixture of things but definitely our confrontational line is 40 yards further up the pitch then when I came in.”
