1940s market will return to Chesterfield in half-term holiday week

The popular event will take place on Thursday, October 28, from 10am to 4pm.

Traders dressed in 1940s costumes will be plying their wares on the weekly flea market, which is one of the largest in the country. There will be a competition for the best dressed stallholder and visitors are encouraged to get into the 40s spirit by donning period costumes.

A replica Spitfire will be on display outside the Visitor Information Centre, offering an opportunity to learn more about the role of these planes in the Second World War. The replica was a huge attraction when it visited Chesterfield in 2019.

Vintage cars, military vehicles and a fire engine will also be on show during the day.

Kalmazoo dance band will be among the acts entertaining shoppers and getting them in the Forties mood in New Square.

Councillor Kate Sarvent, Chesterfield Borough Council’s cabinet member for town centres and visitor economy, said: “The 1940s Market is one of the most popular events in our calendar and I’m delighted that we’ve managed to bring it back this year.

“I hope lots of people will come along and support our local businesses and traders, there will be lots to see and it will be fun for all ages.”

The 1940s Market is a free event that aims to bring more visitors and shoppers to the town centre to support local businesses and market traders.

Chesterfield Museum will also be open as usual from 10am to 4pm where visitors can learn more about the town’s history, including a final chance to visit the Put That Light Out exhibition, which finishes on October 30.

The exhibition looks at life in Chesterfield during the Second World War, featuring displays and objects that will help visitors learn more about rationing, holidays at home, the Women’s Voluntary Service and the Home Guard. Entry to the museum is free but donations are welcome.
