We’ve been rounding up places to go and things to see which are an hour’s drive or less away from Chesterfield.
So if you want the thrill of a theme park, a wildlife adventure or a culture fix, here are some ideas for a great day out.
5. Carsington Water, near Ashbourne
On a hot day you want to be near water but with the beach a long way from Derbyshire, why not cool off on the shores of a reservoir? If you're of a sporty disposition you can try your hand at sailing, canoeing or windsurfing or how about a spot of fishing? Strap your bike to your car roof rack because there's plenty of good cycling to be had on the trails around Carsington Reservoir. Go to www.carsingtonwater.com Photo: Submitted
6. Alton Towers, Staffordshire
Gangsta Granny, based on David Walliams' book, is a new ride for this year at the popular theme park. The special-effects ride takes you on a spin through sewers to the crown jewels vault but can you grab the jewels and escape? To book go to www.altontowers.com Photo: Daniel Lewis
7. Holmfirth, near Huddersfield
This is a must-visit place for fans of television sitcom Last of the Summer Wine where you can follow in the footsteps of Compo, Clegg, Foggy and Nora Batty. Enjoy a cup of tea in Sid's Cafe or check out an exhibition that includes Compo's house, original props and photos together with a timeline of the whole series. Photo: Submitted
8. Yorkshire Sculpture Park, West Bretton
Two new works by Henry Moore have been added to the Moore sculptures outdoors. Up until September artist Rebecca Chesney (pictured) is mapping the bees that she introduced to the park in 2010 and whose honey is now sold in the park's shop. Visitors will also be asked to identify the bees and contribute to a digital map of sightings onsite. Photo: Photo by Charles Quick
